Mission

I founded Working Class Dogs in May 2002 after reading some startling statistics about the need for assistance dogs and the lack of a local provider.

According to U.S. Census reports, there are more than 52 million Americans with varying disabilities nationwide, seven million living in Illinois and more than 117,000 in McHenry County. Yet the nearest assistance dog program placing more than 20 dogs annually is in Ohio.

Puppy Yount

As our program took off, I saw an even more critical need - placing guardian dogs with children with Autism or other developmental disabilities. Recent statistics estimate one in every 166 children is diagnosed with Autism. It affects four times as many boys as girls. The disorder causes the child to withdraw from society and affects almost every aspect of their social and psychological development. There are less than a handful of programs in the U.S. that train dogs to work with children.

Working Class Dogs is dedicated to facilitating increased community acceptance and participation of children with disabilities in all aspects of life. By doing so, we strengthen society and enhance our community, thus assuring the diversity of all its members.
